Wines and Spirits |
||
![]() |
Allied Domecq Spirits and Wines has joined with De La Rue Brand Protection and pallet pool operator CHEP International in a project that combines 2D barcode and RFID to reduce the impact of theft, fraud and counterfeit of product in the fast moving consumer goods supply chain.
This demonstrator project shows that the combination of established and new technologies can be successfully used in the spirits industry and that the data captured can be used to provide management information for business as well as evidence for investigative agencies to bring criminals to justice. |

Personal Care Products |
||
![]() |
Unilever, in partnership with their UK Home and Personal care company, Lever Fabergé, logistics providers Tibbett & Britten and Wincanton and Safeway Stores, have tagged packs of personal care products at the point of manufacture. The electronic tags are used to trace the goods through every stage of the supply chain from product manufacture to retail point of sale.
A series of field trials were devised to test the Home Office hypothesis that by uniquely identifying individual or aggregated units of merchandise and tracking their precise location, significant supply chain improvements can be generated and product crime is less able to thrive. |

Boats |
||
![]() |
HPI and the British Marine Federation have worked together to develop a RFID based boat identity scheme that can be integrated into new and second-hand craft. Existing visible identification numbers are vulnerable to removal and tampering and do not enable the direct interface to other electronic systems and databases. The role of RFID in the project is to make the legal identity of each craft much more difficult to alter, thereby supporting the identification of craft in the event of theft.
This project has produced a national database of marine craft and associated assets and boat manufacturers and importers are now adopting the commercial offering. |

Mobile Phones |
||
![]() |
TRI-MEX International is working with Nokia and DHL to combat mobile phone theft. They have demonstrated the use of fixed and mobile RFID infrastructures using active and passive RFID to provide item level tracking within a large-scale distribution process. In this two-stage project, RFID tags were initially incorporated into pallets and cases and subsequently the phones themselves.
The project has developed vehicle mounted antenna and reader systems capable of reading large consolidated loads in the cross-border logistics environment. These have been integrated with TRI-MEX satellite tracking systems and the company's international control centre to alert customers and law enforcement agencies when detailed distribution plans are disrupted. |
|
Jewellery |
||
![]() |
Argos in conjunction with Integrated Product Intelligence (IPI) has developed an RFID based system for the tracking and tracing of jewellery and other high value products through a complex distribution network to a number of retail stores.
The project has used a combination of passive and active RFID technology on individual transit packs and roll cages. These are read at every point where products are handled, from when they are picked in the central warehouse to when they are received at the retail store. The same process is applied to all products on the reverse journey from retail stores to the warehouse. |

Fast moving consumer goods |
||
![]() |
Woolworths have worked with Integrated Product Intelligence (IPI) to integrate fixed and mobile RFID data collection into existing systems within their distribution network. They are now able to track and precisely locate distribution assets and their contents through the supply chain from the point of assembly to the point of delivery.
The system automatically provides an audit trail of movements, locations and times, and enables investigation of security breaches. The same data is a valuable source of information to enable Distribution Management to improve business processes. Download the Fast moving consumer goods case study (.pdf 724k) |

Compact discs |
||
![]() |
e.centre, together with the EMI Distribution, logistics providers Handleman UK and ASDA Stores have tagged CDs and tracked them through a sample music industry supply chain. The tags were applied at the point of distribution and tracked throughout the supply chain to the consumer. They were also be used to track and analyse returns from consumers, back through the reverse supply chain to the point of manufacture.
The project was based on EAN•UCC numbering standards and GTAG™, the international standard for RFID being developed by EAN International and the Uniform Code Council (UCC). |
|
Laptop computers |
||
![]() |
Dell Computers are now able to integrate an RFID tag within a laptop computer during their build-to-order manufacturing process and are working with project partner BT to exploit the security benefits this can bring. The tag is embedded in such a way that any attempt to remove it will render the computer unusable and therefore of little vale if stolen. The inclusion of the tag allows corporate customers to integrate RFID technologies into building and vehicle security systems and gives law enforcement agencies the potential to verify ownership of equipment and return recovered property to its lawful owner. |
